Knoxville Smokies
The Project
In April 2025, the City of Knoxville, TN celebrated the grand opening of the new Covenant Health Park, the proud home of the Knoxville Smokies (formerly the Tennessee Smokies). Visua, a leader in audio-video integration, was entrusted to design and integrate the stadium’s cutting-edge experience, setting a new standard for minor league baseball.
The Challenge
With an aging stadium located on the outskirts of Knoxville, the Smokies and the city knew it was time to create a new home. Building a stadium in a time with rising costs posed a challenge to meet the quality demands that the stadium owners and officials required. Visua was brought in early on in the project (October of 2022) to assist with all aspects of the technology budget and design – from the large format video displays, audio system, and digital signage systems to the security, network, and access control. Visua had a hand in all aspects of the creative design to meet the needs of the client and the budget.
One of the more unique challenges of this project was to design and engineer a LED videoboard in the shape of Tennessee – that also had requirement to be one of the largest in minor league baseball. Like many construction projects, sequencing and timing of certain elements were a challenge as many trades and contractors worked throughout the facility. Visua coordinated with Partners Development (owners rep) and Denark Construction (GC) closely to ensure all elements were brought to life by Opening Day. Despite the logistical complexities of coordinating multiple contractors, all teams remained united by a shared goal – give the fans and community of Knoxville and amazing show and facility!
The Solution
To bring the Knoxville Smokies’ vision for a new ballpark to life, Visua provided a fully customized AV experience that combined advanced engineering with fan-focused functionality. Right from the entrance, strategically placed speakers immerse visitors in the ambiance of the park. As fans ascend the stairs into the concourse, they’re immediately greeted by a stunning videoboard—engineered with a unique structure and precisely mapped LED panels to reflect the shape of Tennessee. Visua worked with contracted engineers to design a frame and primary structure that allowed for large cantilevers on each side (east and west Tennessee) of the three primary verticals. With the unique shape of Tennessee, Visua also assisted the creative team from the Knoxville Smokies on the graphic look of the game in progress and overall feel – including over 50 animations provided by Visua.
Ribbon boards in left field and fascia boards placed above seating areas further enhance the visual landscape of the stadium. Visua’s engineering team carefully designed and aligned the signage to ensure a seamless fit across all display surfaces – maximizing the sponsorship/advertising opportunities for the team. To support both in-stadium engagement and professional player development, over 200 speakers were installed across approximately 68 audio zones—all controllable via Visua’s Digital Mixer system, giving stadium staff real-time control of the sound environment and fans the ability to stay connected around the stadium from wherever they are. Cameras were also installed throughout the venue to capture fans, players, and in-game moments, enriching the experience both inside and outside the park. Seven PTZ cameras give the Smokies production the ability to capture many angles of their show – including our favorite Oblivious Cam! Working in partnership with the Chicago Cubs, Visua helped implement two advanced camera tracking systems: Kinatrax, which analyzes skeletal movement to assist with player development, and Hawk-Eye, which provides pitch-tracking and performance data. To support all AV systems, Visua ran all necessary fiber optic cabling throughout the facility, creating a connected, scalable infrastructure.
At the heart of the operation is the park’s fully equipped control room, where every element of the fan experience is managed and brought to life. Outfitted with an 8-channel instant replay system, it allows staff to instantly push highlights to both the in-house videoboard and broadcast streams. Additionally, digital signage across the stadium is powered by SAVI, a flexible platform that enables staff to control and update content across any display with ease.
To future-proof the venue, Visua included camera junction spots throughout the stadium, allowing for seamless expansion or integration of new equipment. With a focus on flexibility, fan experience, and technological excellence, Visua’s solution not only met the Smokies' needs—it laid the groundwork for years of memorable moments to come.
The Result
On April 15th 2025, the Visua team joined a sold-out crowd of more than 6,400 fans to celebrate the Smokies’ opening night. Covenant Health Park embodies the spirit of Tennessee, featuring a seamlessly integrated AV system delivered throughout the venue by Visua’s expert technicians. From the moment fans enter, they’re surrounded by the energy and excitement that the Visua team set out to create for the Knoxville community.
